The Museum of Modern Art is currently accepting applications for an Assistant Curator in its Department of Painting the Sculpture. Reporting to senior curatorial titles, the Assistant Curator will be responsible for the following diverse activities of a curatorial department as they relate to both collections and exhibitions:
Qualified candidates will possess a Master’s degree, PhD preferred, with a specialization in the work of black artists and related historical and historiographical issues. Museum curatorial experience and proven expertise and judgment in a related field required. Demonstrated initiative and discernment. Expertise within area of departmental interest. Broad knowledge of the historical, modern, and contemporary art of all cultures. Experience with exhibition preparation, publications, acquisitions, and donor stewardship. Superior research and writing skills. Broad knowledge of office procedures and professional museum practices. Demonstrated ability to build relationships and desire to work collaboratively across Museum departments.

- Develops and stewards the collection. Conducts research on collection presentations and acquisitions, with a focus on work by black artists practicing in the U.S. and internationally.
- Contributes to exhibitions and publications program.
- Participates in donor cultivation and partakes in related activities.
- Keeps informed of current activity in the area of departmental interest through gallery and museum visits, publications, etc., and makes recommendations to senior staff.
- Represents the department on pan-institutional committees.
- Serves as a liaison with outside persons and organizations, and with other departments within the Museum.
